Lake Salagou

In a vast expanse of water amid hills of arid red rocks, Lake Salagou offers an extraordinary palette of colors, combinations of several geological phenomena: the brick-red of the "ruffes" (clay sediments rich in iron oxide) competes with the black of the basalt, of volcanic origin, and blends perfectly with the blues of the sky and the waters. This artificial lake was created at the end of the 1960s to allow the irrigation of surrounding crops. It also regulates the floods of the Lergue River and the Hérault River.

The Loves of Stones

You will certainly come across, on the slopes of Ruffes, these small ephemeral ex-votos writing names often placed inside hearts : legend has it that these little white stones of Salagou whisper the tender and forbidden love of Jeanne, daughter of a baron, and Bauzille, son of a woodcutter.

This 12th century story is at the origin of the inscriptions that are still present and renewed today.

Lake Salagou is a unique spectacle covering an area of 750 hectares, its environment is exceptional, ranging from the end of the Primary era to the beginning of the Quaternary era. Salagou offers you a wide range of very varied activities.
